Jobsite Prep Checklist Before Work Starts

Access and parking

Confirm where trucks park and how far materials must travel from the curb to the work area. In older Houston neighborhoods, driveway width and street parking rules change block by block.

Check gate widths, elevator reservations for condos, and whether an HOA requires notice. A blocked entry can cost a full morning.

Power, water, and light

Test the outlets you plan to use and note the breaker panel location. Bring a temporary light source for interior rooms with no fixtures.

If water is shut off, plan for cleanup water and dust control ahead of time.

Protection

Floor protection, door jamb covers, plastic on doorways, and HVAC return covers stop most of the damage claims that show up at the end of a job.

Photograph existing damage before starting. It takes five minutes and settles disputes later.

Staging

Pick one staging zone per trade and keep walkways clear. Materials stacked in the path of work get moved two or three times.

Keep heavy items closest to their install point, not closest to the door.

Waste plan

Decide where debris goes before the first bag is full: dumpster, trailer, or truck bed. Houston bulk pickup schedules vary by district and cannot be relied on for construction debris.
