Final Walkthrough Checklist for Residential Jobs
The walkthrough decides how the whole job is remembered. Most punch items are visible in the last hour of cleanup.
Clean at eye level and below knee level
Clients look at switch plates, door edges, baseboards, and corners. Dust on top of a door casing reads as unfinished work even when the install is perfect.
Operate everything once
Open and close every door and drawer, run every faucet, flip every switch, with the client present. Finding a sticking drawer together is a fix; finding it alone later is a complaint.
Check the surfaces you protected
Pull protection and inspect underneath before the client does. Any damage found now is yours to fix on your terms.
Leave the documentation
Paint colors and sheens, extra tile, filter sizes, warranty paperwork, and photos of what is behind the walls. This is the part clients remember months later.
Write the punch list together
One shared written list with dates beats an open-ended verbal promise. It also ends the job on a defined date.
Do the walkthrough with the client, not for them. Short punch lists come from shared visibility.
